PostSubject: here we go! AE101 from Uruguay [new wheels, page 4]   Tue Jul 16, 2013 3:19 am

Well, after i sold my E30, i wasnt thinking on buying another car, but about 10 days ago the family mecanic call me and told me "I have your new car over here, drop by and see it" soo fast forward 10 days and here it is...

Its a Toyota Corolla Gli 1.6, only owner for the 305.942kmts, and always cared by the family mechanic (oficial Toyota Mechanic BTW) and since i know him for the last 15 years i bought it without giving it a second thougt

Some pics:

how to archive that look

i already covered some kmts

The only problem right now is the clutch that is on it's last leg it almost look like an automatic if i push it

Well that is for now, i will post more soon.

thanks Very Happy, i tried to emulate that magazine look

First update Very Happy

Well after i bought the car i needed to take a small trip, so i did a little checkup and found that the radiator cap was busted, soo I changed it, then when I removed the old cap, I found a little spring inside the radiator...

**QUESTION**
do you know if there is a rubber washer below the radiator cap? mine have one and it looks OEM, but it doesn´t show on the parts diagram so i dont know if it belongs there

The other day, I decided to give a little love to the engine that was covered in dirt (you already saw the after pic)

I started with the presure washer and some APC, and it started to look very nice right the way, after washing i blow everything with compresed air, started the car and let it warm, everything looked good so i took a nap. When I woke up, my father called me and told me that the car left him stranded on the other side of town... there i went, and to my surprise, the car started rightup, but it had a little hesitation between idle and 2k rpm, with the engine stumbling i went to a friend house and start riping apart and try to see what happened (thats me)

first spark plug (those are mineral oil deposits)

second spark plug

every was great until the 3rd cilinder, the spark plug hole was filed with oil as you can see on the socket

since we had the hood open, we keep removing things

as for the cleaning, I cleaned up to where the water reached jejeje. I ended up reparing one of the shifter cable bushing that had too much play. Also cleaned the distributor cap and rotor, and painted the batery and radiator tank bracket that had some superficial rust

since we have the Alpina 15" lying arround we make a trial test jejeje

(don't get exited those are for a E21 318i that my friend is restoring)

meanwhile he removed some lights that the previous owner isntaled (i dont know what he was thinking)

I also checked the driver side window that wasn't closing correctly, it turned out to be a little piece of glass on the glass run (the glass isnt original, but i guess the little piece it is)

we cleaned the spark plug, gap them correctly, checked that everything was correctly pluged. And it started better than ever. One random pic:P

Until next time, with some news about the clutch, right now it looks im driving with a CVT.

Thanks! glad to be here Very Happy

Well, sadly another little update, this last saturday with some friends we started dismanteling the car in order to change the clutch.

We start to remove things and the first problem, the front engine mount was torn beyond repair. We keep removing and after a while we have the gearbox on the floor and we removed the flywheel, the original idea was to have it  machined but the guy that told me that he was working on saturdays... aparently not, so a little bit of sandpaper did the job, we keep working and cleaning everything, just to find that the gearbox oil seal that they gave to me were too big (more on that later), and when i proceded to change the clutch bearing, the bearing was the same, but the mounting ears where diferent, so we couldnt finish anything.
Yesterday, I took the sample of everything with me and proceed to get the right parts, and on the night i put the right seals on the gearbox and replace the bearing. Right now we are experiencing a cold front with unusual cold tempratures (-4º celcius) so its kinda imposible to work on the car, but i'll do my best.

Well after three days, about 20 hours worth of work (not all of them working) the migthy clutch is changed, since we were working on under the hood I also replaced the oil filter, air filter, crankshaft seal, axle seals, and new engine oil and gearbox oil

This is where the car should spend only one day...

We have all the spare parts on the trunk (or that we thought)

and we start dismanteling things

one removing parts from the top and one from the bottom

a little bit of haggling an the first axle was out

You tell me, what happens when you remove an axle but you dont empty the gearbox first?... kind of a mess.

after we removed all the oil

some more work and both axles are out

we keep removing stuff from above

then some friends decided to show up

everyone was helping, where we where lowering the gearbox

finally its out. Quickly we removed the flywheel because the idea was to have it machined, where was a shop that worked on the saturday until 13hs

a quick clean and of we go

sadly this saturday they wherent working or didnt want to work until 13, we got where by 12:20 and the place was closed, we bought some coarse sandpaper on the way back

The gearbox, apparently the clutch was still fine but it was impregnated in oil

here you can se the clutch and clutch cover, where was some more kmts on that clutch

looking from above

random TB shot

all the tools on the floor and thats me cleaning the gearbox in the back

where was so much filth in there... who knows since when the seal was leaking

comparison between original and alternative air filter...

in the trunk, new parts where coming out and car parts going in

where whe flywheel where with the new seal already in

new shiny cover.

the flywheel after some elbow grease and the sand paper

and the photos stop right now. We keep working and when we were about to replace the gearbox seals, they wherent the right part :(so i turned my atention to the clutch bearing but it wasnt right either! so we coudlnt do more work for the saturday, we did the oil change, new oil filter, cleaned some parts, and not much more

On Monday I proceded to change the wrong parts, and after work I went to work on the car. Here are the old axle seals

As I learned it uses a big seal and a small one, in the first attempt i have only the big one, so when I tried on the small side it doesnt fit, so i went and bought 2 new small ones, then I replaced the small one and when I turned to work on the other side, the small one was too small, luckly i had forgotten one of the big seals, i replaced and the gearbox was good to go

New front engine mount, the old one was distroyed

Its for this car Very Happy

The clutch bearing now is the right one

After a lot of work this is how the gearbox turned out. I lubed al spots acording to the FSM and assambly everything

The room where I was working, the faithfull ThinkPad playing some tunes and with the FSM

Detail of everything

Detail of the dirt protecting the gearbox

And here the pictures stops again... I went out and decided to clean everything that i could, but it started raining and with temperatures close to 0º it wasnt nice to get wet, so I called quits for the day

The other day (now thursday) the sun comes out, and after work I went to work on the car again, and again there arent many pics. I was alone for the first part of job, when I lifted by myself the gearbox and mounted to the engine

Some pictures after a friend arrived

The gearbox in place with the help of some wood blocks and the jack

Me working everywhere on the car

The ONLY screw that didnt fit anywhere, i trully dont know where it goes, but luckly its just one

Panoramic shot of my friends house and another friends Colt

We ended up at 2am, and truth be told, lifting the gearbox was the easiest part, fighting with the engine mounts, double check that everything is where it belongs, put locktite on all the needed screws and torque all the screws... all of that was exhausting, add to it that we where working outside, with almost freezing temperatures and wind blowing. Not nice at all :Dbut i kinda like it

Now the clutch feel is great! as it should be. I can push the car and the cluch bites with no trouble. I'm loving the car more and more

Until next update

Apparently its becoming a tradition for me to dismantle my cars for cleaning, this is my Mazda 323 some time ago

Before this weekend update, I'll leave you an intermediate update.
During the cluch change, while putting stuff in the trunk I came across the original tool set, but it was covered in dirt. So I took it inside and proceed to clean it.

This is what came from the car

I used some foam cleaner, it pick up the dirt with no problem.

If you look closely you can see the brown foam, its the foam lifting the dirt

Foaming everything! after you let the foam sit for a while, either you rinse it or you clean it with a towel

The kit after the clean up

And closed with its own cord.

Thanks for reading, until next update Very Happy

Time to update this thread

As you already knew i had the interior dismantled, but you didnt know why. The reason was to repair the seatbelts that wherent retracting correctly, but one thing lead to another and puff... the interior is gone hehehe.
Here we start

first seat removed and the car is paying itself (those are 15 uruguayan pesos, like 0.7 us dollars)

when removing the rear seats they still had part of the original covering

the culprits of the dismanteling

but because i was removing stuff...

the amount of dirt inside the car was amazing

every flat surface whas covered

After i removed almost all the interior (the carpet stayed there luckly) I begun to vacum everything removing the dirt with a brush, it was a lot of dirt, after that I went and clean every seat and every plastic piece, water and soap or with cloth cleaning foam. Here you can spot the diference

the plastics, one by one

and the foam works great on plastics too

when the night arrived i already had all cleaned (and quite a mess)

but before I start to assambly the interior, I gave some atention to the front doors, they where lacking the original film that separates the door from the door panel, so I went after the steps of a friend of mine who used a local soundproof mat (cheap dynamat style), I started on the passenger door that didnt had the film

after clean it, take some measurements, make a mold, measure again, adjust here and there, try, cut, ajust, and repeat, the door looked something like this. I didnt took a pic but I put some of it on the inside also. Amazing how much the door changes, it feels much more solid know

I did the same treatment to the trunk, and with some wrong made pieces for the trunk I put some of it on the spare wheel well

some pics that a friend took while I was working

the thinkpad companion, that already have some stickers

vacuming everything again

and asambling

Truth be told, the bigest change were the doors, now they feel more solid, they close with more autority (you have to feel it to understand) and the road noises went down a lot. I wasnt expecting all that dirt, but now that it was removed the car smeels a lot fresher

and a little preview for the next update heheeh (no... the cleanup didnt work Sad)
