Hey Scott, I saw a picture you took and posted on TN of a dash insert switch... it had a clear focus on the front of the switch, and the rest was blurred, like depth perception. I've seen that a lot, but how do you get that effect? I suppose my camera isn't good enough lol.

Edit, heck, I should have known that I'd see that picture posted here as well Very Happy

That my friend is called depth of field. It all comes down to the aperture you select when taking the photo. For example, an aperture of f/5 will make the object closest to you in focus while blurring the background. An aperture of f/16 on the other hand will make both the object in front of you AND the background in focus. For that particular photo I used an aperture of f/7.1. That way I could get focus on the front of the switch and also partial focus on the side of the switch, while having the background completely blurred. I used manual focus for that so I didn't have to rely on the camera 'guessing' where it should be focused. A lot of point-and-shoot cameras have the option of changing the aperture in manual mode, but their range is typically very limited. Whereas on a DSLR, you can go as high as f/25 or as low as f/2 and beyond depending on the camera and lens.

Here's some other photos I've taken using a low aperture:

OK, low aperture is the key, thanks Scott, I'll look into that on my camera (not that my Corolla is destroyed haha).

I think I was doing 120kph in a 100kph zone. He said he had trouble catching up to me because he had to weave through a bunch of cars because the motorway was so busy, haha. He was parked on the side of the motorway with a speed gun...bastard

Anyway, here's some more shots (click the full-size on the first one, looks like the cat is almost right in front of you, haha) -

speechless.

But another question, you said that I should adjust the aperture.... but should the camera also be in macro mode for the close shots? Or will a low aperture take care of that.

If your camera has a macro mode then that will automatically set the aperture for you, which will typically be very low. The trick is getting the camera to focus in the right place as most point-and-shoot cameras don't have the ability to focus manually. Ideally, manual mode should be used if you've got it as this allows you to control the exact aperture and shutter speed, but if you're new to macro photography then the built-in macro mode should be more than sufficient to begin with

Yeah, I was looking at the camera today, and in Manual mode, it has the macro. It seemed to be a start... but I couldn't see how to adjust the aperture and shutter speed, so oh well lol. I'll just have to look at your nice pics instead of making my own.

Hmm, in true manual mode it shouldn't have any pre-set macro options etc. What make and model is your camera?
